Converging toward the Truth

Decentralizing any system within our current societal paradigm is hard work. If you haven’t already noticed, we are functioning in a world where the prevalent belief is that by gathering as much data as possible, by accumulating knowledge together within a single point, we will achieve progress. Eventually, all of this information will lead us to the Truth™.

The Truth™ is the answer to all the questions ever asked. Everyone gets a manual on how everything is done and any sort of digression from the prescribed rules is wrong. We live in the countries that have their set of laws and we’re living according to them, whether we agree whatever they regulate should be regulated or not. Simply put, if your government observes daylight saving time, you can hardly choose to opt out – it would be impractical both for you and for the people around you!

You can notice similar dedication towards the Truth™ in SciFi literature as well: generally, if the people were to abolish borders and unite under the same flag, we could establish the Earthian government and focus on matters of universal importance. Any other scenario would be considered regressive

But what if progress doesn’t have to be so singular and definitive?

Nature: the proof that decentralized systems can work

Much like Joichi Ino has noticed in his essay Resisting Reduction: The Manifest, nature is the perfect example of a decentralized system that works. Within a decentralized system, power is shared. Like the constant energy exchange happening in nature, the driving force of a system is never in one place for long. And because it is self-regulating, it is able to adjust whenever a change occurs.

Unlike our plans for technological advancement, nature is inventive with the direction of its development. If conditions of an area change, the system within it readily adjusts as well. That’s what triggers evolution. In cold regions, many animals have thick white fur that keeps them protected. In warm regions, the animal fur is mostly brownish and thinner. Nature “knows” that progress doesn’t look the same for everyone. So why are we forcing Singularity into our system?

What makes a system decentralized

So, what is a decentralized system and how does it work?

Decentralized systems, quite simply, don’t have a center of power. No single person/institution/organization regulates and oversees everything that is happening within them. Cornerstones of decentralized systems are:

  • Participation
  • Collaboration
  • Democracy
  • Individualism
  • Efficiency
  • Diversity
  • Self-regulation

Creating a system like the one that exists in nature, where there is no noticeable hierarchy among its parts, can’t be easy. Especially because many of us imagine progress as an upward-going arrow.

But we’ve known for quite some time that the centralized systems that are in place within society disregard a lot of individual uniqueness. This happens because, for efficiency, we try to standardize our systems to suit the majority… in theory. In practice, a lot of people get left behind because of standardization. In education alone, people who are regularly left out are people considered as minorities (although they make up the general majority of the global population), people with learning difficulties, or basically anyone who doesn’t learn using the abstract linear method.

That’s right – if you haven’t noticed already, how we “learn” in schools is pretty standardized. Stop me if you’ve heard this one already: The classroom is the place where knowledge is passed on from the teacher to the students. Students are supposed to soak in the information graciously given to them by the all-knowing teacher. The teacher passes on their knowledge by linearly building the narrative. The narrative lasts for quite some time and students of all ages are expected to follow it quite dedicatedly throughout its entirety. No matter if it lasts for 45 minutes, 90 minutes, or more.

Does this scenario sound familiar? Unfortunately, many of you will answer with an affirmative groan. Well, Studyum wants to change that.

How Studyum decentralizes education: The micro perspective

Studyum was devised to individualize the way we learn. By adapting to learning styles and preferences, Studyum allows you to explore different ways of receiving information. Your Studyum experience will be highly customizable to help you throughout your learning.

Here are several micro-options that will be available to you:

  • Turning the captions on and off

We know some people don’t like captions while others can’t do without them. That’s why the decision of whether you want them or not is entirely in your hands.

  • Adjusting the size

While learning, you will be able to adjust the size of several elements. The figure of the celebrity coach, the captions, the pictures, the graphs that guide you are there to help you on your learning journey. Adjust their size to make sure you don’t miss any vital information!

  • Selecting the font, the speed, the spacing

Do some fonts make you cringe, while others remind you of toiling over essays, assignments, and reports? Select a font that only evokes positive emotions. If the voice-over is too fast for you, you can effortlessly slow it down or speed it up if it’s too slow. The spacing between the words can improve the readability of a text. So, while our default version of textual instruction will often have slightly wider spacing than you’re used to, you will easily be able to change it to suit your preferences.

  • Calibrating the volumetric content

Video format changed the way we do demonstrations forever. That’s why many tutorials, instructions, and online courses provide visual content in video form. However, what when you want to see how the pose, the move, the stance looks from a different angle? What when you want to see the movement of the hands, the technique, the procedure close up? Or when you want to see the entire picture from afar? Studyum’s volumetric content enables you to do all that!

How Studyum decentralizes education: The macro perspective

From a broader perspective, Studyum brings decentralization to education by providing a highly individualized learning experience and support through technology:
